Roofing FAQ
Quick answers to the roofing questions Rahway homeowners ask most often.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when I call?
You'll be asked a few quick questions about the roof problem and your location, then talk to a local roofer who serves your area.
Does it cost anything to use this service?
No. The service is free to use. Any work and pricing are agreed directly between you and the roofer.
Is it worth fixing an old roof?
It depends on how old it is and how widespread the wear is. One leak on a roof with plenty of life left is usually worth repairing. Problems all over a roof that's past 20 years usually mean it's time to plan a replacement.
How do I check a roofer is legitimate?
Ask for their New Jersey Home Improvement Contractor registration number, and a written contract before any work starts.
Why does my roof leak in some storms but not others?
Wind direction and rainfall intensity change where water hits the roof. Leaks that only appear in certain storms often point to flashing or one particular slope.
What are the brown stains on my ceiling?
Usually water that's come through and dried, leaving minerals behind. It might be the roof, but it can also be plumbing, an AC line or condensation. If it shows up on dry days, plumbing is the more likely cause.
Do flat roofs leak more than shingle roofs?
Not if they're built and maintained properly. Flat roofs depend on good seams, flashing and drainage, so small problems need fixing quickly.
What's a pipe boot?
The rubber or metal collar that seals around a plumbing vent pipe where it comes through the roof. Rubber boots crack with age and are a very common leak.
Can a new roof go over the old one?
Sometimes, if there's only one layer and the deck is sound, but most roofers recommend a full tear-off so the boards underneath can be checked and repaired.
How do I know if my attic is too hot or damp?
Signs include a stifling attic in summer, frost or moisture on the roof boards in winter, ice dams and early shingle wear. A roofer can check the attic intake and exhaust vents.
Do I need to be home for a roof inspection?
It helps, especially so the roofer can check the attic, but arrangements vary. Ask when you're connected.
What should I do if water is coming in right now?
Catch the water, move valuables, turn off power to anything wet and call. See emergency roof repair.
